Is There Power in Being Grateful?

autumngrassAs life unfolds, it can be quite a beautiful thing. I like to think of it as a ride in the old Rolls Royce Silver Cloud – no matter where life takes us, it’s the uniqueness of the journey that makes it so precious for each one of us.

Some of us will encounter bumps early along the road, while others run into them later in life. You may even think at times that the bad has outweighed the good. It is easy to get into a funk about what is not working in your life. Sometimes things go wrong in relationships, maybe one of your favorite cars has broken down, or maybe last quarter’s business results just weren’t what you were expecting. No matter what you are facing in your life right now, remember that there is always something to be grateful for.

During Thanksgiving dinner, my family started a tradition where each person at the dinner table had to speak about what they were thankful for. Things like good health and good company were common subjects each year. This year, I took a moment to ask my staff what they are grateful for:

  • “I’m grateful for all the new relationships I’ve made this year. There are so many good people that have come into my life!”
  • “I have very close family and friends, and wouldn’t trade that for anything in the world.”
  • “My daughter – she’s my everything. I’m grateful to have her everyday.”
  • “My new house is amazing. I can’t wait to have the family over for the holidays!”

You can even take this a step further and do it more often. I find it amazing, the way it starts to change your mindset. Look for small things that are working well in your life, and use these good thoughts to fuel your enthusiasm to do great things! We all want POSITIVE, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned throughout my life, it’s that being grateful attracts more positive energy into your life -always. I am thankful to have you as a reader. Even in the bad times, remember that things could be worse, and I hope you will remember to be grateful in all things and watch as things go from good, to better in your life!

Southampton Costume Parade

Every year Southampton hosts a halloween costume parade. I love it because watching all the children as they march the streets in pride -with each of their costumes just as unique as they are- well, it’s simply an amazing and heartwarming experience! These children have been thinking for some time about who/what they wanted to be, and the reveal of their looks at Sunday’s parade was absolutely beautiful.

Some are home made costumes and others are store-bought, but what makes them particularly special are the children in them. Pure in spirit, whimsical by nature, and energetic at heart, they don their costumes and fully become the characters they’ve set out to portray. Take a look  below at the mummies, dinosaurs, witches and superheroes that stopped by to have their photo taken at the Lucille Khornak Gallery in Southampton this weekend.

This Pretty Little Girl Owns the Autumn Season in Westchester

Whether you are planning to have your family photographed for the first time or the fifth, there are always a host of things to keep in mind to guarantee your experience is as perfect as possible. My team and I have listed a few key things that we find to be essential anytime you are preparing for your next session.

  • Pick the Right Clothes
    • Have everyone dress in coordinating colors, and in comfortable and timeless clothing.
    • If this isn’t your first time, be sure to pick different outfits than the ones you wore in previous sessions.

Sisters Embrace in Westchester Autumn

  • Location, Location, Location
    • You’ve heard it said before, but most people don’t actually realize just how important location is when planning a shoot. Don’t believe us? Take a look at these examples of poorly planned shots.
    • On a more serious note, choose a location that is both beautiful and significant, for example, consider your home. As significant as your home is in real life, imagine how meaningful it will remain as the backdrop of family photos, captured to last for generations. Another great example would be the stables or the farm, as fall in the Hamptons can be really exciting for photographs. I particularly love the scenery right now in Easthampton, Southampton, and Bridgehampton.
  • Be Yourself
    • A lot of photographers are known for their ability to position their subjects. Having been a model myself, I can quickly tell the difference between a photograph that is posed, versus one that is natural, and 10 times out of 10 I will connect with the one that feels natural.
    • In order to capture your best self, you must feel free to be yourself. Let your light shine, and let’s have fun with the whole family!

In my sessions, I always capture the raw energy, the soul, and the whimsy of each client involved. Keep these tips in mind, remember to have fun, you’ll be glad you did.

Hamptons Holiday House-2

Holiday House in the Hamptons

If you haven’t had a chance to see the beautiful Holiday House in Water Mill this year, here’s a look at what you’re missing! There are so many gorgeous and amazing rooms on display. These photos from my recent visit are only a glimpse into what the Holiday House Hamptons has to offer.

The Holiday House is a designer showhouse dedicated to providing funds for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, a worthy cause. The design spaces are each themed around a special moment in life or a holiday that inspires the designer.

I encourage you to spend an afternoon exploring the rooms. I’m sure you will take away some great design ideas for your interiors.

I recommend checking out the garage by Barbara Ostrom, and upstairs take a look at the room by Melanie Roy! A fun surprise is the tennis court on the roof  – a concept that I found very unique and original!

The Answer To Mother’s Day

A mother is the most important lady in our life. Many of us consider the woman from whom we were borne as our mother first and foremost, and as the person with whom we share the strongest bond in our life. This connection is the beginning of a relationship that is unique from any other, and special to each and every one of us. A mother is a person who has committed her life to taking care of her children; seeing that their needs are met, inspiring and loving them unconditionally. Patient and forgiving, she is someone who is always there for them. Husbands will also cherish these qualities in their wives. For many of us, we find this caregiving quality in the woman who brought us into this world, but even still, some of us will find motherly connections in grandmothers, non-biological mothers, aunts, older sisters, teachers, and other women close to us. These women are defined by their grace and unconditional love.

Out of curiosity, I asked the guys in our office how they feel about their mothers. Eternal love was one description along with admiration of her strength, independence, and constant source of inspiration. Another likened his mother to the steadfast light that guides one through the storms of life. “She always has good intentions, no matter what, she always wants the best for me,” said John. During our conversation, us women brought up the thoughtful ways in which our mothers say I love you. Little notes in a lunchbox or a letter in your suitcase before flying abroad are some examples we shared.

In adulthood, there may be times when these connections feel distant, maybe because you live in different locations, or even across the world from each other. Ups and downs come in the natural progression of any relationship, especially so with our mothers as we continue to grow and choose new experiences. Nevertheless, the love of a mother is always with you.

So whomever your lady may be, know that her unconditional love is something to celebrate. Mother’s Day is when we express our gratitude to the mothers and wives in our lives. Common gifts to our mothers have often included flowers, dinner, and (of course) chocolates. It’s a day we set aside each year to honor our mothers, and treat them to the great comfort, or luxury, they have so lovingly given us our entire lives. I truly believe that a mother should be treated like the queen she is, and that means giving her nothing less than the absolute best.

“What is the answer to Mother’s Day?” you may be wondering. The answer is simple: A gift of Love, A gift of Meaning. Give the mother in your life the tangible gift that encapsulates the intangible, a professional photography session with me. In my sessions, I am driven by the quest to capture the essence of the relationship and the true character and personalities of each individual. I do not settle for the typical posed shots we have all seen before. It is the energetic, soulful, and whimsical qualities of the moments I photograph that set my sessions apart from others. Present your mother with a gift that is both priceless and timeless… one she can enjoy now and in the future. Whether you are shopping for your spouse or your mother, a professional family photography session with Lucille Khornak is a gift that will truly last forever.
